6-Week School Holidays: Stay Safe, Stay Smart

As the summer holidays begin, we want to wish everyone a safe, enjoyable, and memorable break. With schools out and more young people out and about, it’s a great time to relax—but also a time to stay alert and look out for one another.

Here’s some important safety advice from your local policing team to help keep our communities safe this summer:

For Parents & Guardians

  • Know where your children are and who they’re with. Encourage regular check-ins, especially if they’re going out for the day.

  • Talk to your children about peer pressure, antisocial behaviour, and the importance of making safe choices.

  • Keep an eye on online activity—summer often means more screen time. Make sure privacy settings are on and they know not to share personal information.

  • For Young People

  • Stay in groups when out and about—there’s safety in numbers.

  • Avoid risky areas, especially at night. Stick to well-lit, public places.

  • If something doesn’t feel right, trust your instincts and get to a safe place. Call 999 in an emergency or 101 for non-urgent concerns.

  • Be respectful in public spaces—antisocial behaviour can lead to police involvement and affect your future.

  • Home & Property Safety

  • If you're going away, ask a neighbour to keep an eye on your home. Use timers for lights and avoid posting holiday plans on social media.

  • Lock doors and windows, even when you're at home. Don’t leave valuables in plain sight.

  • Report suspicious activity in your area—it helps us keep your neighbourhood safe.

  • Road & Travel Safety

  • Remind children about road safety—use crossings, avoid distractions like phones, and wear helmets when cycling.

  • If your teens are learning to drive or using e-scooters, make sure they understand the rules of the road and local laws.

  • Community Matters

  • Get involved in local youth clubs, sports activities, or volunteering—great ways to stay active and meet new people.

  • If you see something worrying—whether it’s vandalism, drug use, or someone in distress—report it. You can do this anonymously via Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

  • Let’s work together to make this summer safe and positive for everyone. Your local officers will be out and about—feel free to say hello, ask questions, or share concerns.

    Emergency: 999
    Non-Emergency: 101
