Tackling Shoplifting and Aggressive Begging

PC Lake has been attending the Harpurhey District centre to help tackle the issue of Shoplifting and aggressive begging. Whilst on the district centre, PC Lake spoke with several different stores and explained that we have been given extra resources for the next couple of months within the Harpurhey area, and that the Harpurhey Neighbourhood are pinpointing exactly which areas require Police support.

PC Lake explained that businesses in the shopping centre need to start reporting all crimes that they come across, so that as a force we can task PSCO’s and police officers to these locations to sort the major problems out. One thing we can do to resolve this is by issuing CBO (Criminal Behaviour Orders) to these prolific offenders, which will give us additional powers to arrest and remove these offenders from the area. PC Lake handed out leaflets called ‘Crime Reporting Aide Memoire for Retailers’ displaying how to report a crime and what information the police need to progress a crime from these stores, as we are seeing an influx of incidents being reported with insufficient information. By following this aide memoire, gives the police a better chance of progressing the crime, rather than it being closed as no further action.

The feedback from residents and store owners within the area, they were happy to see officers walking around the Centre, taking the time to speak to them so they can discuss local problems. Residents were also advised that the next local PACT meeting where they can discuss issues further is the 4th of September 6pm-7pm at the Manchester Youth Zone.

We are focused on making Harpurhey a Safer Town and improving the area.

Crimes can be recorded by calling 101 or in an emergency 999. Crimes can also be logged via the main Greater Manchester Police website on the Chat function.
