How to spot a Cannabis farm and how to report

How to Spot a Cannabis Farm

These farms are often hidden in residential or commercial properties. Here are common indicators:

1. Covered or Blacked-Out Windows
  • Curtains or blinds always closed.

  • Windows covered with reflective material or black plastic.

  • 2. Strong, Pungent Smell
  • A distinctive, sweet, skunky smell, especially noticeable at certain times of day or from vents.

  • 3. Excessive Heat
  • Cannabis farms generate a lot of heat. In winter, snow may melt quickly on the roof of a property compared to neighbouring houses.

  • 4. Constant Hum or Buzzing
  • The sound of fans, ventilation systems, or hydroponic equipment running continuously.

  • 5. High Levels of Condensation
  • Water droplets on windows, even in warm weather.

  • 6. Unusual Activity
  • People visiting at odd hours, often briefly.

  • Rarely seeing the occupants, or seeing different people frequently.

  • 7. Tampered or Bypassed Electricity
  • Signs of electrical tampering or unusually high electricity use.

  • GMP often finds electricity abstraction (illegal tapping into the grid) during raids.
