Operation Hurricane Update

Dear residents.

Today, myself and PC Peddar, Saddleworth Neighbourhood Team, have been out as part of Operation Hurricane, working alongside colleagues from other Neighbourhood Policing Teams and GMP's Roads Policing Unit.

Operation Hurricane is a force wide initiative aimed at tackling the illegal and anti-social use of off-road bikes, Scramblers, Sur-Rons and other nuisance motorcycles that continue to cause concern within our communities.

Throughout the day, officers conducted proactive patrols, vehicle stops and enforcement activity across the Oldham district, but specifically your area of Hollinwood, delivering the following results:

Traffic Offence Reports (TORs) Issued: 13
Section 165 Vehicle Seizures: 7

In addition to this proactive work, myself and PC Peddar responded to Grade 1 Incident, relating to reports of a theft of a motorbike. Enquiries were conducted and the incident was resolved at the earliest opportunity.

We also assisted with an incident which involved two young males riding a Sur-Ron and an off-road motorcycle. The first rider lost control and came from the bike. The second rider subsequently rode into the rear of the first motorcycle, causing him to lose control and collide with a post.

Both riders sustained injuries and were treated at the scene by colleagues from North West Air Ambulance (NWAA) and North West Ambulance Service (NWAS). This was not the result of a police pursuit. 

This incident serves as a stark reminder of the very real dangers associated with the illegal use of off-road motorcycles and Sur-Ron style bikes on our roads, footpaths and public spaces. While these vehicles can seem attractive and exciting, when used unlawfully they present significant risks not only to riders but also to pedestrians, other road users and local residents.

We know this issue remains a priority for our communities and we will continue to work with specialist departments and local partners to identify offenders, seize vehicles where appropriate and take positive action against those causing harm and disruption.
